Caring for a patient with a Ryle’s tube (nasogastric tube) requires careful attention to ensure the patient’s comfort, prevent complications, and maintain the tube’s functionality. Below are key points to guide the care:

1. General Hygiene and Comfort

  • Hand hygiene: Wash hands before and after handling the tube.
  • Skin care: Inspect the nostril where the tube is inserted for redness, irritation, or pressure sores. Clean with a saline-soaked gauze and dry gently.
  • Securing the tube: Ensure the tube is securely taped to the nose and avoid unnecessary pulling or tension.

2. Tube Position and Patency

  • Check placement regularly:
    • Confirm the correct position of the tube before use by checking:
      • The tube marking at the nostril matches the recorded length.
      • Aspirating stomach contents and checking pH (should be ≤5.5 for gastric placement).
    • A chest X-ray may be done to confirm the position of the tube.
